The farm fields, covering approximately 170 acres, are located in Bowdoinham and Dresden, Maine, at the confluence of six rivers which form a large tidal body of freshwater called the Merrymeeting Bay.
The fields the fields were formed during the last glacial period and consist of some of New England's best soil for agriculture. For the 2008 season, these fields will grow all the organic salads under the Locally Known label.
The fields are surrounded by forests and the bay which provides an essential ecosystem for a plethora of wildlife including fresh and saltwater fish species, moose, deer, waterfowl and even bald eagles which are often seen soaring over the fields en route to nearby nesting sites. This ecosystem is strengthened by the farm which keeps dangerous chemicals out of the environment and wasteful development out of the area.
